"It's the same every year," Candy Edmunds thought to herself. "A little bit of something and a whole lot of nothing."
Lark Creek was having their fall teacher's conference, where the teachers from the elementary and high school got together and discussed what would be happening during the upcoming school year. Well, that's what was supposed to happen. In reality, it was more akin to a motivational speech by the superintendent.
Ms. Edmunds would have preferred to be somewhere else, doing something constructive, but attendance was mandatory. Her eyes flicked around the gigantic round table which all of the teachers were seated at. Everyone seemed to be bored out of their mind, with the exception of Ms. Wallman, the kindergarten teacher. Then again, she was always cheerful.
Something in her brain clicked. The man almost directly across from her, he seemed familiar. College, that was where she knew him from.
He caught her staring, and raised an eyebrow. Ms. Edmunds smiled and lifted a hand in a tentative wave. His name... what was it?
Suddenly, it hit her like a ton of bricks. "Renick?" she mouthed.

Renick sat at the long conference table, feeling somewhat out of place having just been hired on and already having to attend a meeting. He arrived early, sat down and started continuously tapping the eraser head of his pencil on the table while leaning back in the comfortable chair and using his free hand – elbow resting on the table - to rub his chin.
After everyone was settled, he was quick to notice the gaze of one of the other teachers, sitting across from him. It was Candice Edmunds, he remembered, and she had been in his required Spanish courses for three of their four years of college.
She waved at him awkwardly, and he took a break from rubbing his own chin in boredom to wave back just as the Superintendent began his rambling about something or other. He was a nice guy, but the man was a drone when it come to introductory speeches. Renick had fought hard just to stay awake during his job interview.
“I would like to welcome Tom Renick, who comes to us all the way from Ohio,” the superintendent said. “He joins the high school staff teaching English for the eleventh grade and will, in the future, be teaching an elective Creative Writing course at Lark Creek Elementary.”
Renick nodded in acknowledgment, not saying a word, and went back to tapping his pencil on the desk.

"Still the same old Tom," Ms. Edmunds thought to herself. She chanced a furtive glance over at him. Never in a million years did she expect to see him again. Not that she didn't want to, of course. She made a mental note to talk to him after the conference... catch up on old times, that sort of thing.
"Now then, let us continue," the superintendent began. His brow furrowed as everyone in the room exhaled and shifted to a more comfortable position in their chairs. "This year is sure to be an exceptional one..."
(OOC: Feel free to end the meeting if you want, and get right into the actual conversation.)

As the meeting came to a close, Renick had learned only one specific thing: Lark Creek was as small and uninteresting as ever. Not to say that it was a bad thing; the low profile that the town carried was one of the main draws for him to take up the teaching position and make the move in the first place. It was the kind of place that he had always wanted to live in, and now he had been here for almost a month.
When everyone began clearing out of the conference room, Renick was the third one out. He started walking down the hallway of the School Board offices while filing through papers stacked inside of a thin manila folder, attempting to find the few exams he had yet to grade from the previous day.

Ms. Edmunds noticed Renick bolt for the door, quicker than she had expected. She wasted no time gathering her things and hurried after him.
Brushing past a few teachers, she caught up with him as he rounded the corner near the School Board offices. He was looking down at some papers, but he didn't appear to be having any trouble walking simultaneously.
"Tom?" she prompted.

After a few seconds of searching, Renick came across the papers that he was after and pulled them out. He closed the folder and tucked it underneath his arm just as he heard his name spoken from somewhere off in the distance.
It actually wasn't so distant, it was just that his mind had been else where at the time and he hadn't noticed Miss Edmunds sneak up on him. He turned to meet her, regarding her with interest and curiosity, and trying to hide the fact that he had been surprised by her sudden appearance.
“Oh,” he said. “Miss Edmunds, is it?”

"Yes..." Ms. Edmunds' eyebrows scrunched together. "You remember me, right?" she asked. "You know... Spanish, in college..." The conversation wasn't going as she had planned, but conversations with Tom had always been rather unpredictable. Unpredictable, but not uninteresting.

"Of course," Renick replied, absently sticking the papers back inside of the manila folder in a position so that they would be easier to find later on. "I had no idea you were teaching here. I honestly don't even think I knew you were going to college to be a teacher!" The latter was more of a confession than a statement.
"What a waste of time, eh?" Renick said seconds later, as they got further from earshot of other teachers. He let his accent slip from the forced American one he had been using, and back into his normal, light Austrailian tone. It was easier for him to talk like an American, with his accent not being nearly as thick as most. "The only thing useful I heard in there was that I still have a job."

Ms. Edmunds nodded. "Luckily for us, there's only one of those a year."
She cast around in her head for another topic, but didn't have much luck. "So, the superintendent mentioned that you're planning on teaching a creative writing course at the elementary school. What's that all about?"

"I'm working with William Burke on that," Renick replied. "I was a Creative Writing instructor in college for a semester, and even though I don't have the degree for it, the school board seems interested in having me start Lark Creek's students fairly young on the subject. I doesn't hurt anyone to pour a bit of their imagination onto paper."
It was a firm belief of his that far too many children were turning to computers, television and video games as an outlet for their creativity, which was most ludicrous, as those particular outlets didn't have a power supply. While he himself enjoyed all of those things as much as the next person, it was blatantly overused in modern society.

"I wholeheartedly agree with you," Ms. Edmunds said. "I'm teaching Music at Lark Creek Elementary this year. In my opinion, it's one of the most creative subjects around! My plan is to teach my students some... more modern music than what they're used to."
She shook her head. "Honestly, my greatest fear right now is that the kids won't like me."
"Wait, why am I telling him this?" she thought. A small, apologetic smile crept across her mouth. "Sorry, I didn't mean to say that out loud."

"I'm certain the kids will love me. It's the faculty I'm worried about," Renick said, and then chuckled lightly. He clasped Miss Edmunds' shoulder firmly. "And don't apologize. The best way to stay sure of yourself is to be reassured by a third-party. There's no doubt in my mind that you're going to be fine. Be yourself, and save changing your methods as your last resort." He let his grip wane and his arm slip back down to his side as he finished speaking.

Ms. Edmunds' eyes unfocused. "You're right," she said, coming back to the present. "Thanks."
An awkward silence reigned for a few seconds before she had the nerve to break it.
"Well, I guess I'll get going... nice seeing you again, Tom!" Ms. Edmunds shifted her handbag to her shoulder and turned to walk away.

"The pleasure is mine, to be sure!" Renick said, getting his manila folder back into his hands. "I expect we'll run into each other again."
He shifted through the folder again, though not really looking at its contents, easily able to locate where he had placed his papers and pulled them back out again.
(OOC: Sorry this took forever for me to post. Kind of put it off because I wasn't sure how to respond and then I honestly forgot about it)
